Thomas Broom was first elected to Buckinghamshire Council in May 2021 for the Gerrards Cross ward to represent the people of Gerrards Cross, Hedgerley and South Beaconsfield. He has quickly made road and footway maintenance a top priority, working with his ward colleagues to make sure that roads in the ward are getting the attention they need. Seeing the resurfacing of Packhorse Road and Station Road in Gerrards Cross, the installation of new drainage infrastructure on the A40, as well as ensuring potholes are filled in Hedgerley and making sure Hedgerley roads will be resurfaced in the coming financial year.
In 2023 Thomas was appointed Deputy Cabinet Member for Community Safety at Buckinghamshire Council. He is currently responsible for Community Safety, Antisocial Behaviour, Counter Terrorism Strategy and Domestic Violence. Working with important partners including Bucks Fire & Rescue, Thames Valley Police and Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner to tackle some of the issues that matter to residents.
From 2021 to 2023 Thomas served as Chairman of Buckinghamshire Council’s Standards and General Purposes Committee. This Committee is responsible for promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct by Buckinghamshire Council, town and parish councillors in the Council area. It also monitors and reviews the Council’s Constitution, to ensure that it assists in the delivery of efficient, transparent and accountable decision making. The Committee dealt with electoral arrangements across the whole county, including the 2023 boundary review, which secured the continued unity of Gerrards Cross in representation on Buckinghamshire Council.
From 2021 to 2023 Thomas was a member of the South Area Planning Committee for Buckinghamshire. During that time Thomas spoke out and voted against unsuitable development and he is proud that during that time he voted to stop new development on Green Belt Land in every application that came before the committee.
Thomas is Senior Parliamentary Assistant to our MP, Joy Morrissey. He has been instrumental in co-ordinating anti-crime activities in Gerrards Cross, swiftly removing the highly unpopular “Quiet Way” scheme and working with communities and the local NHS to ensure a successful and balanced rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine in South Bucks.
Thomas spent the first decade of his career in International Development. Working with schools throughout the UK, including in Gerrards Cross, to develop and deploy literacy programs across southern and eastern Africa. Delivering practical services, in challenging conditions, on a tight budget.
Thomas is Chairman of Hedgerley Parish Council and has worked hard to keep Hedgerley free from development, free from anti-social behaviour and to make sure that the fantastic green spaces are kept maintained and open to residents during the pandemic.
Thomas’s key priorities for Buckinghamshire Council are the protection of Green Belt and green spaces; the improvement of our road network and ensuring that council taxpayers’ money is treated with respect and only spent carefully and efficiently.
